Pack Rat 101: How to Make Your Move Easier
When it comes to moving, it goes without saying that many homeowners dread the packing process. After all, when you have all your belongings in front of you ready to pack, it is easy to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and not know where to start!
However, packing for a move doesn’t have to be something you hate. With these tips and tricks under your sleeve, packing for a move will be simple, easy, and … fun!
Play by the 6-month rule
When it comes to packing for a move, chances are you’ll find that you have tons of stuff you didn’t even know you had. Decluttering is the way to go when preparing for your new space, and it is always a good idea to get rid of everything you possibly can before you leave your old house. Think of the 6-month rule — if you have not used the item for 6-months, it is not sentimental or used specifically for a holiday, then kick it to the curb. The more you throw out, the less you will have to pack, haul to a new place, and organize, so do yourself a favor and declutter anything and everything.
Consider hosting a garage sale to motivate you to get rid of excess items, and the more you are able to sell, the more money you can use to buy new furnishings for your new place.
Make a packing schedule
To make packing seem less overwhelming and time-consuming, create a schedule to break up your activities by day. For example, on Monday go through your dining room and pack up all your plates and dishes. Tuesday you can go through your toiletries and put aside only the select few you need to get you through the move. Wednesday can be dedicated to bedding and organizing your sheets, pillows, and blankets throughout the home. You can call and follow-up with your moving company on Thursday and Friday is for packing clothes and shoes.
Be conscious of empty space
Utilize your dressers, chests, and trunks to your advantage! Don’t pack air — instead fill these furnishings with items such as clothes, bedding, and books. This will cut down on having to purchase moving boxes and can even save you valuable space on the moving truck.
Don’t forget your blankets
It is easy to drown in wrapping paper and bubble wrap during a move, but don’t forget that you have blankets that can fill the exact same purpose. Use your blankets to wrap any artwork, pad lighting fixtures, or cover vases. This hack can work for beach towels, as well!
Stagger your disconnected utilities
Again, scheduling is key to a smooth move. When it comes to your utilities, schedule when you are going to shut off your gas, cable, internet, and electricity. This way you won’t be surprised if something turns off without you knowing or that you forget to change your services over to your new house once you get there. Call each service provider one at a time and choose what date each turns off to be extra prepared.
Change your address one week ahead of the move
Changing your address a week before you actually move will ensure all your bills arrive timely and are not delayed. This also gives you time to get an updated driver’s license and passport if need be. In addition, it always pays to double check that all of your automated subscriptions (i.e magazines, packages, and even Amazon Prime) are updated with your new address as well so you won’t have to track down those new furnishings you just ordered online!
With these packing tips up your sleeve, you’ll be on your way to preparing for your move in no time.
